Like a dream

What inspires you? Does it start with a pattern, something you saw in a clothes store, Instagram, Pinterest, a pretty fabric? I seem to get my inspiration from all of those. But I feel that the projects that start from a fabric are usually the best, like this one.

During a sewing retreat Ansje Handmade and her fabric collection came for a visit. Finally a chance to see and feel fabrics that I only knew from online shopping. Suddenly I saw a beautiful combination of fabrics, that I would have totally missed if I were shopping online. The beautiful nude bridal tule from See You at Six  and the oh so pretty and soft 'Terrazzo Shell' gauze by Atelier Brunette. Immediately I knew what I wanted to make with those two....

ENGLISH

I made a gathered skirt and decided to put the tule on top instead of underneath. A lot of fabric had to be gathered. But....it was done in no-time at all, because I became the proud owner of a ruffler foot. Gathering and ruffling is done in minutes, though I do have to study for a more accurate ruffle ratio. The underskirt is made out of two layers of the speckled fabric. This gauze is quite thin and slightly see through, so I decided to go for the safest option. I finished them with a rolled hem on the serger in a contrast colour. On top is one layer of the soft tule. The tule does not need any finishing, but I did leave it about 1cm longer then the bottom layers. All three layers are attached to the perfectly matching elastic. And that was that and suddenly this big sigh escaped me....

Because...sometimes... sometimes the end result is even prettier then you imagined in the first place. You the last loose threads, put it in front of you and simply cannot believe that just came out of your own hands. This was that moment.

Matching top
Such a pretty skirt deserves a matching pretty top. The daughter asked for a true summer top with small straps. I ignored her completely...(for now)... Instead I went with my inspirational flow and hack the Issie top by Sewpony. I wanted a very romantic look (my partner usually describes this as 'fussy'...) and decided to alter the sleeves to flutter sleeves. You can find a good tutorial on Craftsy. It is an alteration that cannot really go wrong. I really like the outcome on this top.

The top is, like the skirt finished with a contrasting rolled hem. I even had matching red ribbing in my stash for the neck binding. It is those little details that can lift a handmade outfit to the next level. I made size 4 which is lengthened to size 7. I really like the fit of this top. Next time I might deepen the neckline a bit. But that really is a matter of taste. Unfortunately I did not pay attention while cutting out the pattern. I cut the front in two panels, thinking the ruffle would come in between. But instead the ruffle is sewn upon the top panel a bit higher up. So now there is an unnecessary seam. Ah well, there are worse things to go wrong, it cannot really bother me.

And my seven year old girl (whose opinion I did not consult or listen to at all)? She was filled with joy... Even though her style is slowly changing, the sweet romantic girl is always there somewhere. And I..... I will enjoy how this dreamy outfit will dance through the summer months ❤
